Honesty

Luke 5:4-11 (NLT) When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.
Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

When the apostle Peter has this moment of revelation, and declares himself a “sinful man", he is being honest with himself and with God. This moment of venerability becomes defining, for in it, Jesus responds, not with condemnation but with calling. Peter in turn accents this new definition of himself and leaves everything to follow Jesus.

Peter, a fisherman, has just hauled their biggest catch, such that it threatens to sink the boat. He is in awe.

We need this sense of awe of God, for only with it can we truly see ourselves. Sinful Humans.
We also need the sense of calling, for only with it can we truly see ourselves. Precious creations.
How we act next defines which reality we will choose to live in.
Peter chose the latter and followed Jesus, this is what discipleship means.

At this stage of his life Peter had no idea how God was to reconcile the two, why, he must have wondered was a man such as he chosen for this task? The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus answers that question. Peter was made clean by Jesus sacrifice, all he needed to do was spread the message, but first he had to believe it himself.

For three years Peter walked by faith that his sin was forgiven. After Pentecost I believe he understood how that had been achieved and walked by faith of how to spread the message.
We are called to no less honest a life, think about it.
