Government

By the time you read this, we may have a new Victorian government, or a re-elected one. One person once said, “Democracy is a stupid idea until you consider the alternatives”. We are blessed to exist in a country with freedom to exercise our right to vote. Not all are so lucky, and through our own history, Australia has regrettable not always made wise choices in these matters.

This election many monetary promises were made, it will be interesting to see how many are followed through.
This election many changes to cultural norms have been made, it will be interesting to see how many are followed through.

The point we all acknowledge is Governments are fallible.

This month we recognise the birth of Jesus.

The prophet Isaiah tells us, (NLT)

"For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.”- (Isa 9:6a)

To the nation of Israel, who had a despotic Federal government in the Romans, and a complicit local government in Herod and the Pharisee’s, the "hope of a saviour" who would "show a better way" was something to long for.

The prophet continues

Isaiah 9:6-7 (NLT) And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His government and its peace
will never end.
He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David
for all eternity.- (Isa 9:6b-7a)

We exist now in a time of "now but not yet”, when we know in better detail the person who will rule but wait upon this completion for the world in which we live.

That doesn’t, however, stop us practising what he has shown in his life. It doesn’t mean we have to rule or be in charge of everything, this is not the kingdom we are aiming to set up, Jesus will take of that himself when he returns. Through the power of his own Angelic forces.

"(NLT) The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies
will make this happen!” -(Isa 9:7b)

We show the Kingdom by becoming people of Justice, Mercy, and Peace. By taking the influence we have been given and using it wisely.

Jesus puts it this way

"Luke 3:9-14 (NLT) “
Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”
10 The crowds asked, “What should we do?”
11 John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
12 Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, “Teacher, what should we do?”
13 He replied, “Collect no more taxes than the government requires.”
14 “What should we do?” asked some soldiers.
John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”-

For us, it may be a manager at work, do the job diligently, do the best for your company.

As a parent, listen to your children without pushing them too far.

As a friend, be available for those who are hurting.

For ministries you have a responsibility, discharge them with zeal.

In these and many other ways, we show that we live for the hope of the government of Jesus promised by Isaiah so many years ago.

may you have a Holy Christmas.
